   	I think the answer to this one is fairly obvious considering Mount Doom   
   wasn't specially guarded (although armies were in the way) and that   
   there is a paragraph expressing the shock and surprise of Sauron when   
   Frodo puts on the One Ring just above the crack.   
      
   	However, I seem to remember than Tolkien's notes, or something at least   
   in History of Middle Earth alluded to a nazgul (the witch-king himself   
   ?) being present and blocking the way in an earlier draft of this scene.
