XPost: rec.arts.books.tolkien       From: le@top.put.com              Some time between the first two iterations of Douglas Anderson's       Note on the Text, the age attributed to Aragorn in Appendix A at       the end of the narrative about Arnor, before "Gondor and the       heirs of Anarion" (this is page 1044 in the one-volume Fiftieth       Anniversary text) was changed from one hundred and ninety years       to two hundred and ten years.(This reflects his dying in 120 F.A.       as had already been stated in previous editions, after 90 years       in the Third Age,rather than 100 F.A. as had apparently been       assumed in some texts).              In both cases this is described as "longer than any of his line       since King Arvegil".              In the closing volume of History of Middle-Earth is an article       "The Heirs of Elendil" with birth and death years and ages in       years for the Kings descended from Elendil and for the Ruling       Stewards of Gondor.Arvegil is explicitly there stated to have       died at the age of 190 and his father and grandfather at ages       in their 190s.              If Aragorn in fact lived to be 210,either 1)Arvegil must have       lived to at least 210 and been born earlier than stated in       HoME by 20 years or a few more,or 2)Aragorn was actually the       longest lived of his line since either King Celebrindor(who       died at 210) or his father Celepharn(who was some years older       than that),depending on the exact ages of Aragorn & Celebrindor.              Which correction should be assumed correct?              -=-=-       The World Trade Center towers MUST rise again,       at least as tall as before...or terror has triumphed.              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
