   Seems that you only like happy endings. Imagine if Casablanca   
   had a "happy" ending with Bogart getting on the plane with   
   Ingrid Bergman at the end. It wouldn't have been half the film   
   it is. I think that "sad" endings are often much more   
   uplifting, real and moving.   
      
   Take "lost in translation" for example. I disagree with you, I   
   think the ending was very touching and that the Murray (Bob)   
   and Johansson (Charlotte) stayed perfectly in character. One   
   reason why it is touching is that it seems real. We get what we   
   want when Bob spots Charlotte from the cab, runs after her and   
   holds her. They show each other their true feelings, after the   
   rather awkward (but realistic I think) goodbye in the hotel   
   lobby. It would admittedly have been a bit too bleak without   
   that scene.
