Sad to say, I think even Woody has thrown in the towel and now only tries to
put out a movie a year as a means to support his lifestyle. In recent
interviews (i.e., the last couple of years) he has stated that he is a
"failed artist" and he has even downplayed past successes by saying that
fans and critics have read more into the films than he intended.

I think his recent mediocrity is due in part to his aging (he can't credibly
play the male love interest and can't find a replacement that satisfies his
fans), in part to the maturing of American tastes, and in part to the
passing of a special time (roughly the mid-70s through the 80s) in which
stories set in NYC had a special place in the hearts of a strata of
Americans. I think this last notion was in fact symbiotic, with Woody's
movies feeding off of as well as contributing to a love of a time and place
   in NYC.
