I saw it recently too and was surprised by how much I liked it. In fact, I
wondered if I liked it more only because I didn't enjoy the last few films
very much. It isn't one of his greats but it certainly seems to work much
more than "Anything Else" did. What I can't figure out is why. It has so
much of the same familiar Allen content (New York artists and intellectuals,
neurosis, relationships and infidelity, the old jazz standards score, etc.)
yet, it works here and seemed tired and clichéd in his recent films. Maybe
one reason is the actors here are a bit older and don't have the teen movie
baggage that Ricci and Biggs do. Some people commented that the characters
in AE seemed too young to be listening to old jazz. Was AE not as good
because of the casting? I thought Ricci was really good but maybe she and
Biggs were too young and seemed to be imitating the 30 and 40 somethings
found in most of Allen's work.
