Zaren Ankleweed whipped out his/her/its Personal Electronic Thing,
   summoned a BellBot to
   holdthisDELETE-935CBF.21521027092003@news.itd.umich.edu , leaving
his/her/its contact info (holdthisDELETE@ME.mail.com) with the deskbot,
   and proceeded to say:
   >
   > Hmm, I think we may have diverged topics here. I'm referring to the
   > standard commands on a Mac - cmd-Z/X/C/V have been keyboard shortcuts
   > for undo/cut/copy/paste for a long lone time.

Ah, I was going on about you talking about the windows apps that had
   different ctrl-shortcuts.

   > Yes, yes, I know... I blame marketing for that :) Actually
   > (according to legend), the "Pod" in "iPod" comes from Steve Jobs
   > liking the pod racer segment of Star Wars Episode 1.

   Episode One sucked.

The fan reaction worked like this:

"WOW! BEST MOVIE EVER! NEW STAR WARS! OMFG!"

"Wow, that really sucked, didn't it? I mean, Jamaican frog people? Darth
Vader as a little boy who needs to be loved? The big scene of the movie
being the race car scene? I mean, DAMN, man..."

   > Again, blame marketing. At some point the "i" expanded from just
   > referring to the Internet and started referring to a "digital
   > lifestyle" - all your geeky toys talking to each other over network
   > connections.

Sort of like "e" prefixes everywhere... except the E for Electronic made
   sense.

   )

   > Why is that? One of the first commercial 3rd party apps for the Mac
   > was Microsoft Word. mac users (despite their independant nature)
   > still need to work with the Windows world, and they need compatible
   > apps to run on their Macs.

The way I see Apple advertising Microsoft programs, it's sort of like them
saying "our word processing programs suck. Try our biggest competitor". It
sends a negative image out to those who know enough about computers to know
   of the Mac/Win war.

   > Same as it's ever been. Teachers (and parents, for that matter) don't
   > have the time to keep up with all the new gadgets and games that
   > their kids are exposed to all the time.

Once your brain reaches a certain age, it sort of alienates itself from
   change. I've seen it happen.

   > I mean, I still don't know
   > how to play Pokemon,

Dude-with-some-zeros! Yous gots to gets da Pikachu to level
   80!!!!11oneoneone

   > and I suck at these new-fangled home game consoles with their funky
   > 20-button controllers...

I find this amusing, I was talking a good ten minutes ago about this exact
   same thing.

The 8-bit NES had two game buttons (A+B), two function buttons
   (Start/Select), and a D-pad.

The GameCube has three-odd joysticks, three shoulder buttons (but only two
   shoulders), a d-pad, Start/select, A, B, and some sort of "C" button. It's
like the GameCube controller is an elegant bird vs. the NES's brick.

   > but I'm getting pretty good at Dance Dance
   > Revolution :)

   Heh...

   Penny Arcade:
   "Wait, isn't this an arcade?"
   "I think so..."
"Then why are those kids MOVING?"

   > Oops, error on my part. It's for using function / command keys
   > one-handed... Here's a better explination:

Ah, I see... sort of like an easy-access command interface, to help save
time using commands with the keys, like Copy or Paste...

...all of which would be simplified to two clicks with right-mouse button...

   :)

   > Well, if it's a "new" game to some people, they'll buy it at whatever
   > price they seeon the box. Most wouldn't know to look in the bargain
   > bin on the Windows side to see if the prices match :)

Ah, but us "l33t" computer users do things like wait until the weekend sales
to buy CD-Rs, and the like... bargain hunters of a new generation.
