It is derived from ANIMA 'spirit, soul'.

The Greek suffix "-logia" retained its form in classical and Medieval
Latin, but was modified to "-logie" in French, which is the source of the
   English form "-logy".

The form of the word is of Classical Greek origin, its present content is
of later, arguably late 19th century, origin. A speaker of Classical Greek
would have understood the basic meaning of the word, but since the
discipline going by this name only came into existence much later, he
would not have been able to say anything of substance about it for lack of
an established terminology, scientific paradigm, and conceptual structure.
For speakers of Classical Greek, insofar as the subject matter of
contemporary psychology was discussed at all, such discussion took place
within the framework of philosphy and used the terminology, concepts, and
   methodologies of that discipline.

Unh, no. Turkey, Israel, and Egypt are understood to be part of the Middle
east. Until the 15th century western Turkey was Greek (Istanbul <
Constantinople, Izmir < Smyrna). Alexandria, once a jewel among Greek
cities, is now in Egypt. And the Greek Island of Rhodes is a hop, skip,
and jump from the Middle East. I was visiting Rhodes on May 30, 1972 when
a massacre took place at Lod Airport in Tel Aviv. An evacuation center and
hospital were quickly set up in nearby Rhodes which, being part of Greece,
was the closest place that was NATO territory.
