The alternative to psychiatric drugs is psychological therapy, which is
destructive to the mind instead. The drugs do have side-effects but
they often work, while psychological therapy consists of nothing more
than having Dr. Phil lecture slogans at you for $500/hour and is
completely ineffective in treating neurological mental disorders.

Your "double diagnosis" is to provide work for the psychologists. The
psychiatric drugs are relatively new, and prior to their introduction
almost every mental disorder was "treated" with useless talk therapy.
The new drugs changed all that, but the psychological industry was not
happy with the competition and so they successfully lobbied for "dual
treatment" which included the new pills as well as the old $500/hour
talk therapy. In some countries and U.S. states psychologists have
even won the right to prescribe the psychiatric medications, in a
deliberate attempt to blur the lines between legitimate neurology-based
psychiatric drug treatment and illegitimate talk-based psychological
treatment which more closely resembles witchcraft than medicine.
