|    Why was Lincoln killed ?    |

From: jkc@upn.don              I just finished reading an excellent book about the Lincoln       assassination. It's called: "Anatomy of an Assassination" -- by       John Cottrell.              There seems to be not doubt that John Wilkes Booth killed Lincoln.       But this book brings out a lot of things I was not familiar with --       that indicate (but don't prove) that Secretary of War Edwin Stanton       gave the order for Booth to kill the POTUS.              Why would one of the head Republicans want to kill this leader just as       the Civil War ended ? Because Lincoln wanted to be restore to the       South all the rights of states. The radical Republicans would make       a lot more profit with a more vengeful president. So -- they sent       for Booth and had Abe killed.              But why would Booth -- supposedly a Southern sympathizer -- want to       kill a man who was going to be more lenient to the conquered South ?       (That is the part that has always bothered me.) The book suggest       Booth only agreed to kill him -- after he heard Lincoln give a speech       saying he would like to give the vote to the black men who served in       the Union army. Maybe. -- Oh, well ! It is interesting.              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
