XPost: alt.politics.radical-left, alt.drugs.heroin, alt.journalism.criticism       XPost: alt.arguments       From: no.more.immigration@hillaryclinton.com              Seemingly outlandish street races between two luxury sports cars       — a Ferrari LaFerrari and a Porsche 911 GT3 — on residential       roads in Beverly Hills, Calif., have prompted a State Department       investigation. Authorities want to know whether the owner of the       vehicles is a legal U.S. resident and whether the exotic sports       cars are street-legal in the state.              Why? Police say the owner claims he is protected by diplomatic       immunity.              The cars gained nationwide attention over the weekend, after       they were captured in viral videos speeding down narrow       neighborhood streets and running through a stop sign before the       LaFerrari started to smoke.              Residents stood on street corners and filmed the spectacle on       their phones.              “I heard a bunch of loud noises, looked outside,” witness Aaron       Esagoff told KABC. “I saw a Ferrari coming down the street       really fast. It kept on veering around, coming back and forth,       back and forth. It was pretty loud.”              Residents called police on Saturday to report reckless driving       along North Walden Drive in Beverly Hills. When officers       arrived, a person claiming to be the owner of the vehicles       denied the reports, police said.              “As officers were conducting their investigation, they were       approached by an individual who indicated that the vehicles       belonged to him and denied driving at a high rate of speed,       running stop signs or driving recklessly,” police said in a       statement. “That individual claimed to have diplomatic immunity.”              “We believe they are Qatari nationals,” Beverly Hills Police Lt.       Lincoln Hoshino told The Washington Post on Wednesday. “But we       don’t believe they had diplomatic immunity. That’s beside the       point.”              Neighbors told KABC that those who live in the $10 million home       where the cars are kept are from Qatar. And the LaFerrari’s       license plate is registered there, according to KNBC. Some on       social media have speculated that the owner is connected to the       Qatari royal family — but police have not confirmed that.              Outside the home, freelance video journalist Jacob Rogers said       one man confronted him on the street, saying he shouldn’t have       filmed the cars.              “He told me verbatim, ‘I could have you killed and get away with       it,'” Rogers told KNBC. “I told him, ‘The press is allowed to be       here on the sidewalk on a public street.’ He said, ‘[Expletive]       America’ and threw a cigarette at me.”              The Ferrari LaFerrari is an exclusive and rare hybrid with a       $1.5 million price tag.              “The Beverly Hills Police Department has been in contact with       the United States Department of State in regards to the       diplomatic status of the individuals involved and the legality       of those vehicles being operated on a roadway in the State of       California,” police said in a statement.              State Department spokeswoman Nicole Thompson confirmed it,       telling ABC News that the agency is “working closely with the       local authorities concerning this disturbing report.”              “The case is currently under investigation,” Thompson said, “and       we are in the process of reviewing the validity of the alleged       assertion of diplomatic immunity with respect to this case.”                     http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2015/09/16/you-       cant-arrest-me-i-have-diplomatic-immunity-says-street-racer-who-       menaced-beverly-hills/?tid=pm_national_pop_b                              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
