Sorry for the delay in replying but it's been a very busy week for me.
So thank you all for the excellent and varied advice.
For those who asked where I live specifically, I am in Nassau County
   Long Island.
The temperatures typically range from single digits in Jan-Mar and 90's
   in the summer.
Since I have hot water baseboard, my A/C consists of high efficiency window
units which work fine when needed.

The cost for electricity is approximately 27 Cents/KW Hour.
Currently fuel oil is around $3.00 a gallons for 100 gallons.

At this point I am leaning towards running the current boiler until it
croaks, probably in mid Feb when the temperature is 5 degrees F lol !

Since it is a steel boiler and the water here is loaded with minerals and
the only water filter I have is for the outside spigot so my car doesn't
end up with spots after washing, I am concerned about the condition of the
   coils inside the burner.

Anyway, based upon the above, any additional comments?

And once again, I appreciate all advice.

   DR.
