I agree - national security is issue #1, issue #2 and issue #3. And we can
never again trust a Democrat with it. The only Democrat running who had a
clue about national security, Joe Lieberman, was soundly defeated by the
left, despite being on the far left on social issues himself.

   > Republicans and Democrats both suck!

I can only agree somewhat. Most Democrats suck. All too many Republicans -
the liberal ones, of course - suck too. But the system ruins even the best
intentioned conservatives. The left has so ginned the system that it is
virtually impossible to consistently vote conservative (small government)
principles and stay in office. If you don't "bring home the bacon" when it
comes to federal spending, the voters will find someone who does. And in
this way spending is inexorably ratcheted up. (The economist Walter
Williams has written some good articles on this subject.)

Then there's progressive taxation, which allows those who pay no taxes to
impose more taxes on those who do for benefits that favor mostly the poor.
And last, and worst, there's Social Security and Medicare, whose
constituents vote in the greatest proportion of any group. We all know (at
least those of us with I.Q.s in the triple digits) that these programs are
unsustainable and are going bankrupt. We all know that these represent a
transfer of wealth from poor and middle class workers to the largely well
off elderly (talk about Robin Hood in reverse). But nothing can ever be
done about them because the recipients are so powerful and because the
Democrats obstruct even the slightest reform, such as allowing current FICA
"contributors" (ha!) to put a measly 1 or 2% of their money into their very
   own account.

And that was the fatal mistake - allowing people to vote themselves the
proceeds of other peoples' work. The constitution was set up to prevent
that - at least on the federal level. But left wing Democrats, largely
starting with FDR, destroyed those protections.

So here we are. Can anything be done? I'm not optimistic, largely because
the left controls the media and academia, and they have destroyed the old
American love of liberty and it's been replaced by love of security -
provided by a nanny state. And all too many Americans are happy as pigs in
you know what - for now. )On the other hand, only 1/3 of the people
   supported the first American Revolution.)
