   You are completely correct.   
      
   The goal is to use as much existing software as possible (which allows the   
   procedure to work universally) to "mount" the entire mobile device onto the   
   computer over a network connection.   
      
   There aren't actually all that many ways to do "mount" the mobile device   
   onto a computer without adding *any* software to the computer (which   
   provides the universality).   
      
   1. FTP "mount points" in the "network neighborhood".   
   2. SMB mount points (using an SMB client on Android).   
   3. Ad-hoc networks (e.g., bluetooth, NFC, IR, whatever).   
      
   Do you know of any other way to "mount" the entire file system of any   
   mobile device to any computer on the same network, without adding any   
   software to the computer?   
      
   If you do, now is the time to mention it since that's the stated goal.
