Maybe you booted Linux in console mode without a graphics desktop.
Then the graphics card is still in character mode displaying 80x24.

But the full screen mode in Windows doesn't switch the mode of the
graphics card, but just displays a full screen Window in the
graphics resolution of Windows (Win9x still switched to character
mode). I think, it is still possible to boot Windows in console
mode. But if you really want 80x24, don't switch to full screen mode
but enter 80x24 in the size field and change the font size to a value
so that the cmd window has nearly the size of the screen.

I think time is to precious to waist it. DOS was something
you could understand at a lower level. But a modern OS is something
you use if it works, or reinstall it if it no longer works, but
I think it is not possible to really understand it.

A phone to watch videos? Would recommend a big flat screen on the
   wall or a video projector.
