From: joewncw@yahoo.com              >I am new to bluegrass and would like some album recommendations.              Meeting at the crossroads of traditional and more modern BG, I'd       suggest the Bluegrass Album Band -- they have six CDs on the Rounder       label, with a mostly traditional repertoire, but in newer recordings;       highly recommended. In a similar vein, JD Crowe & The New South       (Rounder 0044) is something of a classic today.              Kenny Baker Plays Bill Monroe, on County, is possibly the best BG       fiddle album ever recorded. And Monroe is on it, but as a sideman!              The Rounder compilation albums are good deals (although I'm not sure       how many of them are still in print.)              Personal favorites: The Dillards -- Back Porch Bluegrass and Live!       Almost!, a "two-fer" on one disk; an Elektra British release, but       worth seeking out.              The two Bill Monroe live albums on Smithsonian/Folkways -- one is all       duets with Doc Watson.              Seldom Scene -- there's a "greatest hits" compilation on Sugar Hill       that's a good introduction to them. Also, SH has a compilation of John       Duffey, with work from both the Scene and the Country Gentlemen.              Flatt & Scruggs, The Golden Era -- my favorite intro to them.              Either of the Dry Branch Fire Squad live recordings (also on Rounder);       very traditional, very modern, very funny, very very good.              Wear these out, and you'll have a pretty good introduction to       Bluegrass As She Should Be Picked.              jc              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
