   True, but Johnny Gimbel and Tiny Moore all called theirs mandolins, even   
   though they are single-stringed.  In fact, Johnny's is a tuned like a   
   mandola, but he never bothers to make a distinction.  Plus it's a true   
   1920's Gibson A-model mandolin body...   
      
   I think when they are electric, especially solid body, they are more often   
   single-stringed; I'm thinking of Ricky Skagg's mandocaster, Sam Bush's   
   Fender 4-string etc.
