   Leopold, Wolfgang's father said that all bowed string instruments could be   
   called fiddles, but only some fiddles could be called violins.   
      
   I don't remember his exact words, but it was something like that.   
      
   Personally I like the word fiddle. It sounds like sweetheart, and violin   
   sounds formal, like saying Madam. (Or maybe I'm thinking of the toast,   
   "Here's to our wives and sweethears, may they never meet!"   
      
   Oh well. Nobody has spilled beer on my fiddle, but my tuner did get doused   
   once and it was drunk for a day before it settled down and could tune a   
   fiddle again. I didn't mind lending that girl my tuner, but you can be I   
   will never lend her my fiddle.
