Generally speaking, the formula for creating a group that's a flop is for
someone to say, "Gee, I think we should have a ____ group," then create
   it and hope people come.

Generally speaking, the formula for creating a successful, vibrant group
is for someone to notice, "Gee, the discussions about ____ have been
overwhelming this group," then create a new group to accommodate the
   existing demand.

There isn't a fiddling newsgroup because there hasn't been enough demand
(as evidenced by message traffic) to merit one. There have been plenty
of discussions about fiddling here in rec.music.makers.bowed-strings, but
those discussions haven't been extensive enough to motivate folks to
split them off into their own group. And as others have pointed out,
some of the best discussion has come from cross-pollination between
players from different traditions. You're welcome to discuss fiddling
   here whenever you want!

This principle of demand-driven group creation is explicated at
     http://www.big-8.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=policies:rfd#traffic_analysis

I'm convinced this principle applies to all sorts of groups: newsgroups,
   web forums, churches, hobby clubs...
