   I think it may have started with Bill Monroe's own preference.   
   The key of B was probably the most common key that his band   
   played in...also a good bit of stuff in E, and some of   
   his fiddlers played a lot of fiddle tunes in Bb.   
      
   A bluegrass fiddle instruction book I've got says that B   
   has some advantages on the fiddle when trying to get a   
   "bluesy" sound. The key of B isn't used much if ever in   
   old-time fiddle, though.
