The Carolina Chocolate Drops play for Sternberger ElementaryThe Carolina
Chocolate Drops, an African American String Band, gave two performances at
Sternberger Elementary School on Monday, January 30. Band members Rhiannon
   Giddens, Dom Flemons, and
Justin Robinson describe their music as "Old Time Music" drawn from the
musical heritage of the foothills of North and South Carolina.

The 45 minute show was fabulous! "The performance was jam-packed with
educational and historical facts about the music and the instruments,"
according to Dr. Melissa Nixon, principal. She also stated that it was
impressive the way the group tailored
their performances to the younger children in order to hold their attention
and added more information for the older grades.

the children to the banjo, guitar, fiddle, harmonica, kazoo, and the jug as
well as hand rhythms. One thing that made the presentation special is the
   educational aspect of how
music was made hundreds of years ago using objects such as a jug and other
natural items as musical instruments. "I thought it was really interesting
when Rhiannon showed an us African banjo that was made from a gourd, goat skin
   and a bamboo stick," said
Caitlin Murphy, a third grader at Sternberger. "It made me want to go home and
   make my own instrument."
