This is, indeed, the convention, but it is a large part of the problem.
What if not everyone is a folksinger? Let's say, for instance, that Jean
Luc Ponty visits your local open mic. Should a musician of his virtuosity
be obliged to take orders from every small-time, beginning folksinger in
your town, simply because his violin is, by it's nature, more of an
accompanying instrument, or might it be more appropriate to simply let him
rip, knowing that whatever he chooses to do would represent an improvement
over how the song would sound without him? Folkwad strumfarts should
*appreciate* skilled embellishers improving the overall sound of their tunes
and demonstrate their appreciation through an atmosphere of egalitarian
mutual respect, rather than compulsively employing their guitar-centric
Guitar Chauvinistic conventions as a rationale to inflict subservience upon
   them.

Again, the whole problem is solved by simply *playing* with each other and
accepting whatever happens. Unless you are *paying* someone to do as you
   wish - - - just shut the F up.
