   Actually, I believe that Pete had an existing banjo converted (the   
   neck and fingerboard lengthened by three frets) by a small guitar shop   
   in NYC, owned by either John D'Angelico or Jimmy D'Iquisto in the late   
   '40s.   
      
   Vega started making the long-necks in the late 50s, after the Kingston   
   Trio hit.
