|    Open Letter to Holly Cole    |
|    19 Dec 03 12:04:03    |
From: meldon_fens@meldon.com              I feel bad for Holly Cole.              Dianna Krawl receives so much attention and I'm not sure why but can you       imagine being Holly Cole. Pounding the bars for years and arguably a       contemporary forerunner of Canadian Jazz, she probably agonizes over every       pound of weight she carries, every note she emits and no doubt her stage       image.              So here comes this upstart, makes a few CD's, scores some big name national       commercials and gets married to Elvis Costello. Meanwhile Holly gets to do a       few TV spots on relatively obscure Canadian Specials and keeps plugging       away.              I can only say that it is about the music and not the priorities of the       executives in charge since they are not necessarily the same. With due       respect to Dianna, her music seems dull and listless. Sorry. It's the only       way I can describe it. By comparison, Holly has at least vocal stylings. Her       voice is bright and brings life to the songs she sings. I fear that the       apparent subordinate status she is given by the industry will compel her to       deviate from the core of her talent.              This seems to parallel in some ways, the history of Kim Mitchell. I remember       the Max Webster days. Those wicked guitar leads and the quirky tunes. It was       not until a seemingly conscious effort was made to dilute the music that he       began to receive some commercial success.              Don't do it Holly. We love you exactly the way you are and we don't give a       damn if you put on a few pounds from time to time or we don't see you doing       Chrysler commercials. Its about the music.              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
