From: ucanlearn@any.edu              On 18 Jun 2004 18:26:51 -0700, djbluhawaii@yahoo.com (Jacqueline May)       posted this (may be clipped):              >I read the anniversary site on the CBC, and I'm jonesin' for some old       >school. I remember when I was in junior high, and despite my mom's       >efforts, I stayed up WAY past my bedtime to listen to Brent and his       >ingenious mix of music. Anyway, after going to the anniversary site,       >I've noticed there's a lot of people here who are looking for some old       >BNW stuff. Well, you can add me to the list.              Well, I still have that old Jazz Butcher (Conspiracy) extended-play       CBC studio session on cassette kicking around here somewhere.       You can hear Brent's voice on the included version of Sex Engine.       I still have several cassettes (airchecks) of Brave New Waves, and       a lot of those feature the artist profiles Brent used to do. One fav is       probably the show that featured the original recordings of tunes by       Sarah McLachlan (such as Ben's Song and Steaming, which were       later remixed for her Touch album).              >I used to hear the show on WXPN here in Philly, and well, it was a       >godsend. Of course after that was over(at least here), I nerver had       >it that good since. I have recently listened to Patti, and I think       >she's doing a hell of a job. But Brent left a HUGE impact. He was       >just too damn brilliant. I'm sure, most of you agree with me.       >Anyway, if anyone can help me out with some copies of the show on       >tape, I'd appreciate it.              Brent was good sometimes but after a while he started to sound a       bit like a loud-mouthed bore (he impressed me as having a bigger-       than-necessary ego too), and the program grew stale to my ears as       a result of the program's resistance to say goodbye to punk/new       wave and move on to newer emerging alternative music. I often       thought the CBC's weekend overnight program "Nightlines" was       a bit better, offering a wider variety of music including the airing of       complete albums. Nightlines, however, also tended to lean towards       music that was more commercial in nature which is something BNW       wisely stayed away from. The BNW program of today sounds okay       though.              You may have been too young to recall another program the CBC       used to air. Programs like, for example (iirc), the Great Canadian       Gold Rush hosted by Terry David Mulligan. A few of the old shows       I still have include an nice live concert by Valdy and the Hometown       Band, plus Terry's interviews with George Harrison and Steve Miller.              >If you want to set up some kind of deal or whatever, fine. I'm not       >doing this for money, though. It's all about the throwback, BABY!       >Thanks.              You might want to check CBC's web page (maybe there is a kind       of marketing area) to see if you can buy recordings or some other       merchandise) associated with BNW (like the Jazz Butcher tape I       mentioned above).              Just my thoughts.              Gus T.              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
