   Your comparisons aren't valid because the people you've used as examples   
   have had more time to grow as songwriters and/or have had compatible   
   co-writers for years. And your comparisons are also weakened once we compare   
   them to each other. Most are from different genres, from different decades.   
      
   Elton John, the Guess Who and Radiohead are great. But do you like every   
   single song they've put out ? I doubt it. I have several of their CDs and I   
   don't. I also have hundreds of other CDs but I don't sit down and   
   arbitrarily claim that Queen is better than Fleetwood Mac, who is better   
   than Sarah McLachlan, who is better than Simon & Garfunkel, etc. I like them   
   all, for several individual compositions.   
      
   Do you feel a need to defend Rufus Wainwright ? No artist is beyond   
   critique. I could list hundreds of people with better vocal abilities and   
   i'm sure there are plenty of people out there that bitch about how he's   
   riding his parents wake and how cancon is getting him on radio.   
      
   Well, Cancon doesn't force people to buy his music either and i'm not about   
   to pass judgement on all of his current and possibly future releases based   
   on the very few compositions i've heard from him. After all, I didn't like   
   Placebo's similar monotone nasal vocal style but they eventually released   
   "Slave To The Wage" and "Bitter End".
