I do believe Chicago did an entire SINGLE cover, my brother reminded me
about it, on their very first album Chicago Transit Authority, the Spencer
Davis Group Steve Winwood written "I'm A Man"...and I think Chicago did it
   even better better ;)

And who wants to be hired to do covers when they could be hired to their own
   Originals?

I believe it's about 'locking' onto the first Awesome version of a song and
considering other versions inferior only if they really are inferior!

Was he ever a 'good fit', like when the band first formed?

Some jobs involve risk. That's how reality works. To make everything
risk free is a pipe dream.

It's not that. For gosh sakes, merely existing is risky. Rather, it's how
well one reduces and minimizes risk that determines how long they'll stay
around, as in the old addage; There are old pilots and there are bold
pilots, but there are no old, bold pilots...though I'm not sure how much, or
how much of that I believe ;)
