That's crazy, and it's even more crazy that anyone would try to see how big
a band they could make...that's like killing the proverbial golden goose!

   > We are a package. Individually, we'll be making over twice what the old
   > guys were, and yet we'll still be under what the venue had to shell out
   > for the old band.

Now that makes sense, because it's also an incentive to keep your band
   doing gigs there.

   > Our three piece vs the old bands six or sometimes seven people.

No comparison - their band was stupid, yours is smart, very easy choice!

   > Related to this. Some would argue that we should take the same pay, per
   > player, and just charge proportionally less. So if the old band wanted
   > $600 a gig for six players, we should take $300 for a three piece.

Yes, half the size would be half the price.

   > I counter that with this. I recently had a new roof put on the our house.
   > Contractor wanted $6000. Ok. So what if I'd have ask how many on his
   > crew for my job ? He'd have said 10 or 11. Then, what if I'd have come
   > back with, well, ok, you can do the job but here's what I want you to do.
   > Instead of a crew of 10, how about you cut that in half to 5. And then,
   > you cut your price in half also, since you're only bringing half as many
   > roofers ? Do my roof with a smaller crew for $3000. Sweet.

   > Would that work ? I don't think so.

So instead of $100 apiece, you're going for $200 apiece.

Putting on a show is not quite the same as putting on a roof ;)

Since the roof job, or 'gig' ;) would in addition to materials, also be
charged according to labor, half as many workers would at lest in theory
take twice as long, and vice versa, and charged by the hour, which means
more workers, fewer hours, and less workers, more hours.

   > We bid on the job, as a whole. It's the whole band, or nothing. And we
   > want paid fairly considering we're doing the same work as the 6 piece.

Not quite. You're doing the work of three, not six - that is, if the job is
to be considered in the same terms as the roof job ;)

   > Once the club is full and everyone is happy, how does having more guys
   > milling around on stage make a band worth more ? It doesn't.

Of course....unless there's one more and the band is called Chicago ;)

   > Yes, there is some slack in a big band for someone being sick or
   > something.

Chicago is a 7 piece band and even with that many, I still can't imagine
even one of them not showing up to perform as their sound would suffer quite
   noticeably.

In other words, if it's a band worth hearing, NO ONE is there as a SPARE
   performer!!!

   > But in our case, we just have to deal with that possibility. In the trio,
   > we could work without the drums. But if singer girl or I can't do it, the
   > gig is off.

Actually, Everyone is Vitally important and Must be present to perform if
the band is to sound like it should, no matter what it's size.

   > Hey, maybe I could get the roofing contractor to come by himself and then
   > only charge me for materials and a few bucks for him ? Do my roof for
   > $1000. I should try that, see what the response is :-)

Sort of a 'solo act'? ;)

   > We're keeping all our other gigs, mostly. There will be days when we play
   > two that do. One in the daytime ( tourist gig ), then pack it up and head
   > off to the dance job. That's happened before. I know of oat least two
   > dates where I'll have to just canel my scheduled solo gig and do the
   > dance. It can be worked out. Expecially considereing these, if they come
   > thru, are worth about 5 times as much as all the full band club dates we
   > have per year. For that, I'll move or kill a few solo jobs.

I pray I'll Never be in a conflicting schedule situation!

   > Or some broken fingers ?

Doing that to a musician! More than just cause for Deadly self defense!!!

   > I have things left to do this summer. Going as fast as I can. It'll
   > never get all done.

   Jim

What I meant is that so far, we've had a ROTTEN summer and should get to do
it over again, the Right way!!! ;)
