As Sly & The Family Stone lyrics put it:

All we need is a drummer,
For people who only need a beat, yeah!

What song? What else, "Dance To The Music", of course ;)

   > This presents me with quite an opportunity. One of the issues with that

   > Too much bass, a lame drum track running at low level, and more. Oh, and
   > he didn't like my Roland synth guitar.

Can't he keep the beat without the clicks?
I've worked with them myself, on my demo recordings, and I've found them to
be quite a challenge, sort of motivates keeping the tempo, rather than
   hearing the annoying clicks ;)

   > All that is over. I've spent the week putting things " right " as far as

It'd be easier doing them Live instead ;)

   > So here it is. Let's put this to the test.

   > I've turned all the little things back on that were off because .....
   > what was the point ? The drummer and extra guitarist were just gonna
   > bury those anyway. Their theory on backing tracks was, they don't like

   > them out. Because of that, I had the bass line VERY hot so at least I
   > could maybe hear that when they got into a song.

Who want's to share their Live sound with a recording?

   > Now, that's unnecessary. Things are back to sounding great. And without
   > the help, they should sound great at the gig also. It'll also be plainly
   > obvious there's more going on that I'm playing live.

And that's what's Fake, or at very least, INCONSISTENT!

Putting it another way, What's the point of having Live musicians playing
   along with recordings at all?

Why not play ALL tracks Exclusively instead? The musicians can record their
own parts as tracks beforehand and then that way, don't even have to show up
and play since obviously there's no real need to, as recordings are
considered as 'acceptable' as Live musicians...which is why they're used,
right? If there are some recordings ('tracks') already, why not finish that
pattern and have all sounds as recordings ('tracks')?
The sound should be consistent, either ALL Live, or ALL Recordings!

   > Yep, it's time to find out whether our audiences care.

Will they even *notice*? Are they actually paying attention?

   > Will they be happier with much nicer sounding songs, at the expense of
   > purity ?

Depends on whether or not they're listening!

   > Or will they all go ... fake fake fake and walk out ?

Will they *listen* to the Music?

   > It could go either way.

How so? by their Attention? Or Inattention?

   > How about I let them decide ?

How about first finding out if they even can decide? Or are they too
   Distracted?

   > We'll either be off to even better things, or it'll flop and I'll give up
   > on these jobs. Since there's no chance at all I'm going back to an all
   > live band composed of fill in, whomever is available, on any given day.

No recording can ever substitute for having the Right band members!!!
And not having them doesn't 'justify' recordings as a performance either!!!

   > I'll let you know how it goes in about two days :-)

   Jim

How do you think it'll go?

I'd venture to say that if the dancers are self-absorbed in what they're
doing, dancing, then it won't matter if you have some 'tracks', or all
'tracks', a CD playing, or an MP3 file, or robots, or holograms, or anything
else, even if it's only a drum machine to crank out the rhythm for their
dancing...BUT, if they're actually Listening, then it'll be another matter.
