Then he's got two other options - Learn to play the drums more quietly, or
   play an electronic drum kit.

There was solid state equipment back then - when I was 16, in my first band,
I used to play my keys through a large - appeared to be four 12", Standel
solid state bass amp...sounded great! I knew it was solid state because it
came on instantly and was amazingly light compared to the tube amps. I
haven't been able to find any pictures of it online, all they show are the
smaller amps and this one was big. Standel has a site so maybe I could ask
them about it since I didn't see it there either.

Listening is Always a Requirement...unless sounding like CRAP is 'okay'!

There's a psychological tactic I use with myself in such instances - don't
think of it as a change, rather think of it as an *experiment* and *try* it
   first.

FORCED change is almost always Traumatic, but easing into *trying* it is far
   less stressful.

   > If you don't like following, as in staying in time with other players,

I'm not referring to that kind of following, but rather following those who
don't do it that way, in order to prevent a train wreck.

   > if you don't have fun doing it, and you don't have to work, don't need
   > money, then do whatever you want.

I Love Music and have more than fun - it becomes truly Orgasmic when it's
   done *right*!

As for Filthy Lucre, what I Really Need is for the love of its underlying
Satanic concept, euphemistically called 'money', actually a 'replacement'
for God, to NOT be loved, thus Cutting Off the Root of ALL Evil, and Replace
THAT with a Gift Economy! That would be Genuine PROGRESS!!! ;)

   > too much of this, not enough of that.

But good soundwork can work practical miracles in making the sound onstage
much better, for a much better Vibe!

   > yep. earplugs. I didn't wear them enough tho.

That's a problem I have too, because I can't stand things stuck in my ears,
which means that I have to choose what's worse, too loud sounds stuck in my
ears or earplugs, which means I keep tolerating and holding off using them
when that's the first thing I should do at the first hint of too loud.
Yet, with the Clowns I played with several months ago, I couldn't wait to
ram the earplugs in - they were That Painfully STUPIDLY loud!

   > playing loud was the thing banc then. LOUD. Loud topped every other
   > thing. Loud over good. Loud over everything.

I've happily never had it *that* bad, bad enough, but not to the point where
being too loud was even more important that playing Well!

I'd rather watch air show videos ;)
