So how might such a 'downside' play out?
Maybe the other bands merely have a problem with turning down, and actually
   working on their material.

So far the 'gossip' has been that you're not loud enough - so how much could
   it be trusted?

   > Even if we are being brought in in an effort to turn things around, that

IF that WAS the case, perhaps they've figured that your band would be the
best choice to turn things around, and they'd be right!

A practical reason to insist on cash Only!

One place we played said they were going to start paying us with checks - I
was going to tell the person that our tax attorney won't bother with any
checks under $1,000 ;) but by that time the decision was already made not to
play there anymore. Besides, since I don't deal with Banksters, I don't
   accept checks.

   > I didn't keep very detailed records because I was pretty sure some gigs
   > went unpaid.

I've been in similar situations - if they don't pay in cash, they don't pay.

   > If I actually knew, maybe I'd have been upset. Instead, I showed up,
   > played the jobs and forgot about it.

That sounds familiar...because if they pay with a check, it's an
inconvenience, so they might as well just get a show for free, and I'll let
then know it too, and also let them know that if another venue will pay
   cash, they'll get first consideration.

   > Then, at some point way down the road, there'd be a check in the mail. I
   > was happy when it came, never thought about it otherwise.

If that happened to me, I'd probably put the check up somewhere and forget
   about it again ;)

   > Long term tho, that attitude paid off. They are much better about paying

   That's the Best motivation!

Not so much your nature, but rather the nature of too many past experiences,
   mostly with Idiots!
