I can't enjoy the experience Unless the sound is right and I can hear it
   All, Clearly.

   > yep. tube amps were heavy. And high maintaince.

I like the rich even harmonics overdriven tube distortion, but there's no
reason to have an entirely tube amp to do that, a much smaller circuit will
do the job, and the output can go to a solid state amp.

   > or maybe it means what it says, outdated.

Outdated is mostly an opinion, but outmoded implies being functionally
   obsolete.

   > Origianals are a high risk game. I've been in almost famous bands, and
   > even we couldn't just ignore covering other peoples songs.

When you write an Awesome song, you'll know it's Awesome, and when you
perform it, the audience will also know it's Awesome and not be able to get
   enough of it!

   > It is true that when you have a song on the radio ... which we did ...
   > that
   > people will really turn out to see your gigs.

In other words, all they have to do is hear it, even once, and if it's
Awesome, it'll stick in their heads instantly and they'll want to hear it
again, and anything else you've written...I've witnessed this by playing my
demos for total strangers who were instantly captivated by their creative
   innovation, lyrics, and Freshness!!!

   > There's a catch tho, you have
   > to have songs on the radio. And then a few months later you need a NEW
   > song on the radio. Or it will all slowly unwind.

All it takes is for your material to be heard, whether on the radio, or some
other way - I like radio because it reaches the most listeners at one time.

   > My band was once in that position. After a few months we happened to

   > our gigs. He talked to some of us ( not me ) and wrote an article. Said
   > basically that we pumped out radio proven " safe " material.

What is 'safe' material? ;) Ever see how people drive, or otherwise
Needlessly Gamble, like on the lottery and such, who wants 'safe'? Besides,
whatever happened to that old saying; "Try it, you'll like it"?

   > That included some of our own " originals ". I quote that because the
   > songs
   > we actually got decent airplay on weren't written by us, but rather
   > were pushed on us by our record company.

It'll be even better when they're your Originals!

   > What I take from that now is that people, some people, want to see
   > artists take big risks.

Everything is a risk, particularly if it involves driving, but when Wisdom,
Intelligence, and Maturity prevail, the risks are dramatically minimized.

   > In fact what they really want is to see us fail
   > in some catastrophic manner.

   Envy.

   > Sure, they say they want to see us play
   > the hits, but that's only the buildup. If they cared about US, us as
   > people, they wouldn't want to see us drink ourselves to death. Or OD in
   > some fit of depression.

One doesn't have to do Music to get messed up on drugs ;)
And one doesn't have to get messed up on drugs because they're doing Music
   )

   > They wouldn't want to watch some super talented
   > artist ( Prince or Petty ) tour right up to the point it kills them.

Death by touring ;) That's how I want to go, if I 'have' to go, because
there sure are a LOT of LOT WORSE ways do go!!!

   > That's what the big hungry public really wants. They want to see up
   > shoot up to the stars, then explode.

There are always such A**Holes in anything, those who go to auto races
hoping to see a fiery crash, or to an air show to see a plane crash, or a
skydiver's 'chute fail to open, or a suicide jumper go splat on the
pavement. They're always rubber-necking while holding up traffic as the
Creeps slowly creep by an accident scene hoping to see some blood and gore -
they need to get lives because they Practically have None. They'd do well as
spectators at the ancient Roman arenas watching gladiators fight to the
death or political prisoners fed to hungry lions, and public executions and
other things like that...and when they don't get that, they'll settle for
freak shows on television - they're Pathetic!

   > Well, I'm not playing that game. Sorry. I don't want to be famous that
   > bad.

I couldn't care less about 'entertaining' such Worthless Garbage...rather,
I'd rather do concerts for those who want to be Moved by the Music, to a
Trip into the Love Vibe - that's what it's all about for me!

   > Yes, to shoot for the stars you need to do originals. But understand,
   > that if you try that and don't succeed, you'll fail in a big way.

Not with an "I *WILL*" attitude!!!
I'm Literally Living Proof! I was 'guaranteed' to die minutes after being
deposited into this Hell on earth, but I'm still here - Totally changed my
   entire attitude, Permanently!

   > If it were otherwise, then the clubs would be full of people playing their
   > original material.

In this case, "otherwise" means no Zombie Apocalypse...but Zombies are
everywhere and their 'originals' are as Lifeless, Mindless, Soulless, and
   Meaningless as they are!

So you have ALL the advantage!!!

   > Originals only become good, in the public's eyes, once they are on the
   > radio or tv .... not just because you wrote some song and got on stage
   > and sung it.

Once they Love what they Hear, That is what endears you to them, because
after all, Music is an EAR THING and:

Makin' Music's Makin' LOVE, and IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC!!!

   > To recap. We did originals before being signed. No one cared.

Who the HELL is 'no one'?

But the big question is, what did YOU think of your Originals?

Once we were on the radio tho, then we were a big deal.

There's Mostly if not practically Entirely CRAP on the radio, so that Can't
   be the Honestly big deal!

   > Then after a bit our songs weren't on the radio anymore, and since the
   > record company didn't
   > make enough money off us, no more were gonna be.

So how was the Original material, Really?

   > The band broke up. I came back to Ohio, bought a house, settled down a
   > much wiser person.

Since you're still breathing, you can always 'regroup' as it were ;) and do
it again, the Right way this time!

   > you touched a lot of points I will have to think about. It's late tho,
   > and I have a gig tomorrow .... bye now.

   JimD

They're points that come up all the time anyway, so they're always out there
