I don't much like games, mostly because they're mostly Stupid, along with
any other negatives that might be floating around.

Games should be Only for the entertainment and amusement of those who enjoy
playing them, and No one should EVER be FORCED to play them, for ANY reason,
   because that's pure EVIL!!!

   > No, no they can't.

PCs can do anything a computer can do, and particularly since they're the
most popular kind of computer, there's more software available for them, and
I'm sure there's some seriously professional software for Linux based
   systems.

   > There are different levels of reliability. Some things are very reliable,
   > some things aren't.

But complexity and reliability do tend to be inversely proportional...for
   software and hardware.

   > Reliability, Low price, High performance ... those three fundamentally
   > compete in any product. You can have any two, but never all three at once.

   > that'll cose you, you give up a low price.

All three can be achieved together, when GREEEEEEEED is factored OUT of the
   equation!!!

   > Mac laptops are eh so so on performance, but real good on reliability ...
   > not good on price. Are macbook pros overpriced ? Dunno, maybe.

The name crApple will always stand out in my mind as being the company that
would have Prevented me from owning a computer, thanks to their Rip-Off
overpricing, right from the beginnning - going back to the days of the Intel
6502 processor. So instead my very first computer was an Atari 800...totally
blew crApple away in every way, including being a fraction of the price. Or
to put it another way, ever since they became available, I always wanted a
computer, but crApple, thanks to their Greed, would have guaranteed that I'd
Never get my wish, so naturally I Loathe that thieving company! And it's
also why, because you can build them yourself, that I regard the PC as the
   Truly Practical computer.

   > When I go looking, it seems to me that comparable hardware costs about the
   > same regardless of brand. Configure a pc to match the mac's specs, and the

   Not if you build it.

   > If you don't care about what's under the hood, then sure, there are pc's
   > out there that cost less..

Manufacturers of completely assembled systems are looking at crApple and
seeing their Ripping Off customers and in classic Monkey-See-Monkey-Do
fashion, are also overpricing their products...which is why there's no
substitute for building what you want.

   > And, yes, there are pc's with slightly better hardware than the same
   > vintage mac. ... are they reliable ? do they cost the same ? Price,
   > performance, reliability .... it's an unavoidable economic principle.

I'd rather shop for the computer's components, and assemble them myself.
That way, I get the most 'bang for the buck', I get the features and
capabilities, and upgradability I want, because I'm building it FOR myself,
not FOR some Fascist/Corporatist Monopoly or prospective Monopoly!

   > It won't do my work. I use these things to make music. And as I've said,
   > the time it would take to move all my work to another platform might just
   > exceed the amount of life I have left :-)

There's more software for PCs, and not only for winBlows, but also for
   Linux.

   > What gamers don't do it use them for real work. They sacrifice
   > reliability and stability for performance. I need both of those.

No they don't. They're 'addicts' and 'must' have their precious silly games
   working reliably all the time.

   > Yes, it is possible to config a pc as a decent DAW. But why would I want
   > to ?

How about to help DisemPower a Monopoly that's only concerned with Ripping
   you off? ;)

   > That would be like, comparable to me setting out to translate all my books
   > ( a lifetime collection ) into some language I can't currently read or
   > understand. Just so that when I've done all that, I could then learn to
   > read in that new language. Why ? No sane person would waste their time
   > that way.

I've seen that very same attitude applied to different makes of vehicles
too...along with so very many other things as well, even political
   'parties'.

However, as for myself, if the situation was reversed and PCs were the more
Monopolized Rip-Off and I couldn't afford one, but I could build a mac
instead, then That is what I'd have done.

   > Nope.

Linux has a lot of serious professional software available.

   > I tried WINE years back. Can't remember why. Maybe trying to run some
   > mac thing on a pc. Didn't work. Possibly because of hardware driver
   > issues. It's been a long time.

WINE is for running windows programs in the Linux os.

   > I realize you're trying to help, to offer suggestions. But, hey, I have a
   > wife. She sees these things in black and white. Told me outright just a
   > few days ago that switching platforms was a stupid waste of my time.

That’s why you should have started with PCs ;)
And like I'd mentioned so many times before, the Only reason I'm into PCs
is that I can actually somewhat *afford* to be.

   > I have to live with her. Plus I totally agree. We're not gonna fight over
   > this.

If they were all affordable, I'd have a collection of different computers
and would have probably found a way to make them all compatible with each
other, which needs to be done anyway, to finally design a Totally Generic
computer! But so far, PCs are the closest to that.

   > Sometimes I wonder if this isn't actually already hell, and part of the
   > game is we don't know it. That lets us have false hope, and makes the
   > situation all the more one of constant suffering.

It already is the beginning of Hell, an eternal one for those who insist on
spending eternity there, but a temporary one for those of us who do not.

   > too much is still too much. when I was touring, getting two weeks off to
   > come home and rest was such a blessing. traveling is way overrated.

   JimD

I've traveled around, that's the part I don't like, but the part I Love,
playing, more than makes up for it!
