Can that be       > run on non Apple hardware ? Sorta. Not legally, not with any support       > from Apple, but just barely doable.              Okay, I thought this was universally known but apparently not, the actual       machine that started it all, by "all" I mean, all the affordability and       ability for users to build them was the IBM Personal Computer...which has       resulted in such a movement towards a totally generic computer as to be       called a "PC".              > The software is the issue, always was. I've years of work that take       > particular software to run. It would be stupid to throw all that away       > just so I could be using a different operating system.              I'm sure there's software out there to address such issues.              > Reliability in software is achievable. It requires clearly spelled out       > design goals, and thorough testing. That takes planning, time and money.              But it's practically always the Gift Economy mentality that does the best       job as the Root of ALL Evil and it's resulting Conflict Of Interest is what       *prevents* the most Honest and Effective designs since the Focus is on the       Impure Motive of Filthy Lucre.              > in a sense, if you take cost / price out of the equation ... then yeah,       > you can maximize performance and reliability.              It's done with Open Source Freeware all the time.              > Just as I said, you can achieve any two of the three ... :-)              That's not enough!              > You might want to take a breath .......              > maybe make a cup of nice calming tea. Don't want you to stroke out.              I've endured a lot more than that ;)              > I have similar feelings about american auto manufactures. Easy solution       > for me. Buy something made by someone else. I don't let it upset me any       > more than I can.              I have that feeling about ANY auto manufacturer.              > Can't build a laptop, at least not that I know of. Hell, there's a market       > opportunity. Design a laptop case that a pc motherboard would fit in and       > work.              I only have a 'laptop' because I was given one, but I don't *need* that       particularly design as desktop has always been all I've ever needed.              > I have over the years built " rack macs ". Took te guts out of some of       > the early intel macs and mounted them on 19 inch rack trays. That was an       > idea some people did a while back. There were commercial companies that       > sold pc's and macs in standard rack size cases. Makes sense. You see these       > all the time on tvs shows and movies where the hero goes into some super       > secret gov server farm. Big harshly lit rooms with white ceilings and row       > after row of rack mounted servers ........              But I've never heard of a computer component store where you can get a mac       mb, and everything else to build one.              > I don't need that. I need a new macbool pro. Decided on a the 15 over the       > 13 screen, because my eyes aren't getting any younger. And the 15's have       > dual cooling fans, the 13 a single one. Looking at the prices, by the time       > I put equavilent memory in a 13, and an equal cpu, it would cost as much       > as the 15 anyway.              I'd rather a desktop design, where the main section sits safely on the       floor and only the monitor needs to on a stand.              > Need at least a quad core i7. Apple disabled hyperthreading on i5's. And       > a dual core i7 ...... why bother.              That's the advantage of an IBM *compatible* PC, nobody disables anything -       you get what *you* want on it...particularly if you build it...and Nothing       is more *personal* than a computer you put together yourself!              > So that's the shopping list as of now. I don't particularly like the       > thunderbolt game. It'll take a bunch of adapters to connect up my USB       > gear. Still, that's one price of progress. To get better performance,       > things have to change.              But when progress is Deliberately delayed, or Retarded, then it doesn't come       fast enough. Take minivans for instance - when they first came out, they had       only one sliding door, on the passenger side, and it took a few more years       to put them on both sides even though helicopters had them on both sides       from the beginning, particularly the UH-1 series. Then it took a few more       years to put power doors on one side, them some more years for both sides.       Now, finally sliding doors with windows that go up and down have been       added...when ALL OF THESE FEATURES COULD , AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN MADE       AVAILABLE THE VERY FIRST TIME AROUND!!!       Another reason why playing games is STUPID!              I don't want such NONSENSE being done with computer capability, or ANYthing       else for that matter!              > Sure, If I had lots of space, and didn't need to move it constantly, I'd       > build something. It's been a while, many years ago that wife got tired of       > looking in my band room and seeing a big counter full of pc towers ....              It's a desktop computer for gosh sakes, not a Fender Twin ;)              > You do. If it doesn't have to move, that's certainly a way to go.              It's easy to move a desktop computer...they're not very heavy.              > Have you noticed that I'm always talking about laptops here, about mac       > book pro's .... the little tiny portable macs ?              Tiny of stature, Huge of price - I'll take a homemade desktop instead.              > I never talk about my desktop computers. Simply because I don't use them       > for my music.              They'll work.              Besides, notebook computers are more fragile and expensive and there's       definitely more to risk bringing them onto the stage.              > Nope. There isn't. There are different kinds of software on different       > OS platforms. I don't care how many games exist on pc's. I don't care       > about multi thousand dollar accounting software that might exist in unix       > or linux.              There's lots of DAW and related software for windows and even Linux.              > I care about live music software, about DAW software.              About the only kind of live software I'd be interested in would be something       like Native Instruments.              > And I care a tiny tiny bit about having a usenet client that will still       > work on a modern os :-)              That should run on any os.              > There are real technical reasons why a sloppily engineered gaming machine       > isn't a good computer for all purposes. Mac's work for music. Other       > things do too. Fine. Too much for me to keep up with. The only issues I       > deal with with Apple are they cost a lot and they overheat. But at least       > they work in between those problems.              Any well written software will work well for any application.              > We all do what we have to.              What we really have to do is have more Choices, and that means eliminating       the GreedMongers.              > No doubt. Does it have something that will run Logic Pro X projects              [continued in next message]              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
