That's ALL all right! Being aware of it and *adjusting* to it in real time
is critical...making the difference between a great performance, and a train
   wreck!

I change the volume and for that matter, the style dynamic as well
constantly throughout the entire song...it happens all the time with our
   church band.

But that peak hold function is ONLY there to show how high the value
got...probably pursuant to the acoustic equivalent of V(ne) Velocity (Never
   Exceed) in an aircraft ;)

   > I feel, as does the chick singer, that our stage level only edges upward.

With practice, it shouldn’t feel like holding back but rather adjusting as
   necessary when necessary.

   Stupid, huh ?

Yeah, it sure is...because it's up to each player to dynamically adjust the
level of their playing, both upward and downward...to make the song sound
like it should...it's all part of musicianship!

And that's an interesting question to get the answer to from each player, as
in: What do you consider musicianship to entail? Unfortunately if not
tragically, it's not as common an understanding as it should be. It's a
good, not to mention very important communication topic to consider.

   > Is there any limit as to how loud the drummer will play ?

   An IMMATURE one, no.

   > I don't see any. He says he can't hear the music. Turn his monitors up,
   > and he'll go right with them. If he has more monitors, he plays louder.

He's got some growing up to do!

   > Ever see those pictures with drummers in a plexiglass cage :-)

At one church I used to attend, their drummer had one...and he wasn't
particularly loud either...so I wonder what he was able to hear through
   that enclosure.

   > Why is it so many don't appreciate how loud they are ? Do they just like
   > the noise ? Are they deaf ?

Possibly any or a combination...but the bottom line is THEY DON'T LISTEN!

   > Or, maybe our guy is trying to drown out the tracks, because he doesn't
   > like those, feels they are " karaoke ", maybe thinks if he playes loud

Do an experiment and find out if that's it.

   > Bands are a PITA.

   Nah, only the Immature are!

   I hear that!
