I'd never heard that one until I checked it out just now...Awesome Christmas
   tune!
Of course I'll take issue with the lyrics that imply that trains are only
   toys for boys ;)

Any more Roger Miller tunes, like the funny ones? ;)
   He's one of my favorites.

   > We're using a " multi-track recorder .... well, sorta ..... Modern
   > computer DAWs are what old analog multitracks have been replaced by.

The thing I use, a Fostex MR-8 Multitracker, is a little like the old tape
recorder types, except that it's entirely digital.

   > If it were 1968 or so, I suppose we'd use an analog multitrack. Hey, you
   > know what ? I still have an old 4 track Teac, 2340SX. Does it still work
   > ? Who knows. I have it on a desk in my band room, just to add to the

Those things are great...bigger and heavier than the VLSI digital stuff now,
but still great...and of course, being analog, they still have "that sound"
   )

HD multitrack recorders are still around...and if they work, who cares how
old they are? You can still get the files out and use them on other
   equipment.

   > Biggest issue with it is that the only way to get recordings out of it is
   > to burn them to a CD. It can't firewire or even ethernet. Technology

Certainly there must be some other kind of output(s), aren't there?

   > For real work, it's all computer these days. Have to stay current :-)

Those older units are also computers, as is the MR-8 that I use, it just
doesn't have a keyboard and monitor.

   > They are living in the past. Like what they like, don't know or care what
   > the audience likes.

That all depends on what it is that they like ;)

   > yes, those would be nice. but we do dances, and they expect us to know
   > songs they know also

Then that's sort of like 'living in the past, because if people are too lazy
to get to know new songs, you'll always be Stuck playing the songs they
weren't too lazy to get to know long ago.

   > They came to an agreement, the band will be allowed. It'll be fun to see
   > how that plays out.

That's cool. Now it's up to the band to be cool and not get too loud.

They specifically said, no bands. Too loud. That seems plain enough to me.

   > Do you ever go out and listen to live bands ? Ever ?

If one is nearby I might but mostly, I'm so sick of CopyCats that I don't
   waste my time.

   > Bands around here aren't just too loud, they are stupid too loud.

Same thing around here - it's an epidemic of Stupidity, and just look at
what it's done to this country, not only Music!

   > I'm ok with that, mostly. It's not my job to point it out to them. It's
   > my job to take their gigs after they get let go for being too loud.

That and many other reasons...it's the same with the 3 piece band my
Soulmate and myself will be going over our new setlist with this Saturday!!!
We'll present a genuine option to all the Immature Stupid Ego-Infested
BORING Crap out there...and our very name will reflect that, and of course
be a constant reminder of what we Must Always aspire to, and to make, "The
   Difference".

   > Or, for whatever reason the place uses to gig rid of then rather than come
   > out and tell them they are too loud.

That's so Tragic, because all it takes is to get an SPL meter and start
Measuring the sound levels and set limits, and when those limits are
exceeded, step in and say; "You'll either have to turn it down or stop
playing"...that ought to Shame them, that is, if they can be shamed, or at
least motivate them, through the embarrassment, into turning down ;)

   > Hey, volume was big part of why my buddies classic rock band recently
   > broke up. They had a constant and long running disagreement with their
   > soundman over volume. In the end, the band broke the band up. Stage volume
   > and not wanting to let the chick singer pick any of the bands material.
   > Oh well.

With such obviously IMMATURE attitudes, they Never should have formed a band
in the first place, until they first GROW UP!!!

Soundwork is as much of an ART as playing, singing, and writing Music...and
it deserves the same level of Attention!!!

   > Maybe the place is a big urban motel complex in a major city. Maybe.
   > Maybe they have jet setters flying in to sample the 5 star chef's
   > delicacies. Maybe.

It'd probably be a good idea to learn about the place to get an overview.

   > Or maybe not. I don't know anything at all about the venus, as far as
   > demographics of the clientel.

They most likely have something on the web.

   > What I do know is, they don't allow bands ...... because they are too
   > loud. Ha. Suck that, stupid rockers :-)

   Jim

But that's Prejudice, pure and simple, because it assumes that ALL bands are
   like that, and that's Unfair.
