Alumimum case, nice rollers for       > the cable, and a $4 pot :-)              They're horribly overpriced - around 90 bucks is simply toooooo much!              > You wanna see stupid overpriced, check out the Roland EV-5 expression       > pedal. Plastic case ... one 10 K potientiometer ( maybe a 50 k trim pot in       > some versions ) and that thing costs $60. Amazing.              30 bucks more if it's metal instead of plastic, disgusting!              > Back to the Ernie Ball pedal, there are guys online who will add active       > electronics to these, for a considerable amount. Again,       > amazing. It just never ceases to amaze me how much people will pay for "       > that sound ", for some magical, non existent improvement to what was good       > enough in the first place.              Sound is like that, a very powerful stimulus...and unfortunately as the       Greedy Opportunists have discovered, something to also stimulate losing a       lot of money from those who want one.              > Two weeks ago, at a band gig, a guy came up to me and was talking guitars.       > I believe I had my $45 dollar Aria Strat copy :-) He was all about how I       > should be playing a better axe. He said the better guitars have better wood.              Time to pull out the acoustics specs, like spectral signatures and such.              > Better wood ? What in the world is that, I thought ? Wood from 65 is       > better than wood from 78 ? How ?              Can't be all that great, because the wood their heads are made out of isn't       all that good at thinking ;)              > After a little back and forth, I ended up saying " hey, they're just wood,       > dude ".              Yeah, I like carbon fiber much better ;)              > He never got my point, but we had to start playing again, so I got out of       > the discussion. Yes, I know that from a marketing angle, I should jump       > right in there and continue the myth of this or that being better, and if       > you buy it you'll be a guitar god. But that's crap. It's all down to how       > you play. The guitar, assuming it's tunable and solid, has nothing to do       > with your songwriting or playing style. That's you. The guitar is a tool.       > Nothing more. Unless I get some endorcement deal, then who knows what lies       > I could be paid to tell :-)              Jim              There is better wood, better at being much more expensive and therefore       something to brag about ;)       It's the same with loudspeakers or anything else - big, impressive,       Expensive name, it's *got to* sound better, simple child psychology.       Your $70 strat and his $7,000 strat - his *must* sound better...for any       reason other than simply looking at the specs...and he gets to pay for all       that bragging...they can have it!              Ouisie              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
