We're practically a " no fly zone " now.              Turning points can be absolutely anywhere ATC and/or the tower specifies to       the pilots at the time.              > Suits me fine. Commuter jets still fly over in the late evening, but       > straight lines, higher up, and a few miles to the east.              But on runways with ILS approaches, there are specific and precise       orientations to the runway. There is a localizer, which is in effect a       relatively small and low powered, very high resolution radio transmitter       which registers on a VOR-like OMNI bearing indicator which displays the       exact approach course to the actual heading of the runway itself so that       aircraft are always able to precisely line up with with it horizontally.       Meanwhile, a similar verticle arrangement, the glide slope, keeps aircraft       descending at a fixed angle, which means that anything underneath on the       ground will always see the aircraft flying through the very same place in       the sky as they're on final to land.              > I have some pics of it, will see if I can track them down. Maybe they don't       > want planes turning and stuff over the town.              The ILS may be intercepted at any point where it can be received. Approach       plates often specify procedure turns, and Sometimes ATC instructs pilots to       turn to intercept the ILS at specific points, and still other times to make       a "straight in" final approach i.e. no procedure turns, just follow the ILS       right down to the runway to land once you're receiving its signal.              > I drink when I need to sleep, but am mentally still going.
