I'd think a sound is a sound.              True, a sound is a sound, and a person is a person, NOT a recording...THAT's       what Phony.              > Sure, it might not sound exactly like some other thing, like a lute, but       > then guess what ? I don't care.              I've got a lute voice on the DX7 but a real lute sounds better...hopefully       the Motif will have a better representation/simulation of one.              > I listen to the sound and like it or don't. I really don't care if it       > measures up to someone's idea of what a sound should sound like. It       > sounds like it sounds. Either I like that, or I don't.              I don't like Crappy imitations...Awesome imitations are another matter       however...the sounds have to be accurately good enough to be orgasmic to get       the Love Vibe ;)              > Live music is sad, then, when it doesn't match up to expectations.              The *situation* is sad when the Live Music isn't as sonically rich as the       studio recording...so that's something to avoid!              Some bands are Excellent at avoiding that, and as a result, it's often said       that they actually sound Better Live in concert than on their       recordings...and that's precisely how it's *supposed* to be...because they       didn't use Trickery...because they used effects in the studio that they also       use Live for the Same, Awesome effect, only Live and with the Love       Vibe...Kansas comes to mind...and when a band does that, you can be sure       there will be Live performance albums, like "Two For The Show" for Kansas,       and the live albums of others too, like Bob Seger (Live Bullet and Nine       Tonight, Two Live albums), Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (Pack Up the       Plantation: Live!), and REO Speedwagon (Live: You Get What You Play For) to       name only a few ;)              On the other hand, Led Zeppelin, not so good Live, except for a few       songs...and you can bet the audience kept comparing their Live sound in       their minds, to the sound of their studio album recordings - but by sharp       contrast, Kansas audiences are amazed to hear that they're Treated to       essentially the same QUALITY in the sound of their Live shows, that can be       heard on their studio albums, and add to that, it was Live...and they Loved       it, and why not, it's AWESOME!!!       That's what The Difference is going for!!!              > I wonder what makes them think they can show up live and not sound exactly       > like their records ? Don't they understand that mimic-ing the records       > EXACTLY is what a lot of people want to see ?              Who said anything about 'exactly'?       Still, the idea *should* be to sound just as good Live, if not Better...but       resorting to Tricks only possible in the studio will make for audience       Disappointment when a Live show is unable to use them, and That's the       problem.              Tragically, there's nothing new about Faking it.       I've seen videos taken from film from the 1960s of bands *shown* to appear       to be performing only for the sound to be Unmistakably from their studio       recording, while the band obviously lip synched i.e. Pretended to sing, and       also Pretended to play...and that too is classic...classic DISGUSTING,       because neither Right nor Wrong will Ever have expiration dates!!!              > So ? I don't need to blow in anything to trigger a synth.              No, the triggering is done as it's always been done, by pressing the key,       but the breath controller Modulates the sound produced to be more Accurately       similar to the ADSR envelope of the blown instrument it's simulating, which       enhances realism.              > Ah, now we get to it. Yes, the envelope is being generated, and can if you       > want to be modify or control it in real time. This isn't the 70's. Synths       > improve all the time.              It's merely another interface, in a way a kind of low tech form, where the       player blows into a sensor to make the synthesizer sound like an instrument       one must blow into in order to play in the first place ;)              > You need to do what needs done to satify yourself.              If I can ever get a breath controller, and it's not too expensive, I'll try       one.              I remember reading an article about bands of the 60s, where they were always       looking for something to get them a more creative and innovative       sound...even slicing razor slits in the cones of their speakers to get a       fuzz tone, before all the awesome effects pedals were anywhere near as       commonplace as they are now...and when they did start coming out,       experimenting with them to produce more unique and interesting, and       psychedelic sounds.              Practically ALL of that creativity and innovation was Lost, by being       ABANDONED to the Mindless Dumbed-Down Zombie age which started at the end       of the 70s, and has only gotten worse, and Worse, and WORSE since...which is       why I'm experimenting with effects...to return to that Tradition - yet       another reason for our name, The Difference.              > In my case, I don't care much what our drummer thinks sounds real. It       > sounds fine to my ears, and my ears are my criteria.              Does it actually sound that good?              > If I cared. And I don't. He thinks what he thinks. I remember a few       > years back how he hated electronic drums. Of course he'd never played a       > set. Now, after a few years of playing our at rehearsals, he seems just       > fine with them. The only reason he doesn't buy a set is .... wait for it       > ..... he's actually said this ..... they cost too much.              I thought they cost similar to an acoustic kit, unless he wants a really       expensive set.              > Yep, it is, and always was, about the money. Never was anything to do       > with the sound. I knew that all along. Modern electronc drums sound great.       > Drummers, or anyone else who doesn't think so is just nuts.              I've never heard them in person, although I have seen and heard them played       on you tube.       But there is one particularly glaring dissimilarity with acoustic drums and       that's that electronic drum surfaces are SO VERY SMALL, at least on the       Yamaha set I saw...the 'drum heads' are Small, the 'cymbals' are Small. They       sound okay and those playing them appear to be getting a similar response,       like stick rebound, to an acoustic kit but why so Small?       The bass drum doesn't matter since it's struck using a pedal, but ride and       crash 'cymbals' are tiny compared to the brass acoustic variety, and, like       the 'drum heads' of the mounted toms, floor tom, and snare, that's got to       take some adjustment for drummers used to acoustic kits.              > Jam.              > sheesh.                     Jim              You've got a bad feeling about jamming because of bad experiences with       Idiots who aren't serious in the first place...that's somewhat similar to       not liking guns because of how Violent Criminals use them.              To me, jamming is still playing and still Requires that same level of              [continued in next message]              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
