And symphony orchestras still do, but hearing loss risks from all those
acoustic instrument volume levels can rival the loudest amplified bands.

   > Then sometime in the late 60's someone invented floor wedges.

The establishment was always trying to do in rock & roll, and what better
way to kill it than kill the hearing of those playing it!

   > Suddenly, it was possible to turn the singers up. Guitar players and

And to think a pa *and* a *competent* sound person could have Fixed all
   that!!!

   > Because they could.

Yeah, but mostly because they were, and still are, STUPID!!!

But of course by now they're still Stupid *and* DEAF!

   > And they kept turning the amps up, and the drummers played louder, and the

One would think that SOMEONE *has* to have some SENSE!!!

   > And the result is, the singers still can't hear themselves. But the stage
   > level is massively higher.

And the hearing loss is higher too.
   .......

   > After a while, singers and sound people got tired of carrying those big

   > hear any better anyway. They just cause the entire band to play a LOT
   > louder.

Pure IDIOCY is what causes the band to play louder!!!

   > But the idea, the seed, of vocal monitors was planted. Sound people,

Small, efficient near field monitors are a Very Awesome idea!

   > To understand this process. You have to understand the vocal monitors are

Monster wedges with sometimes TWO 15" speakers in each one can't do anything
   but Damage hearing!

   > In the beginning, bands played A LOT quieter. Then floor wedges, along
   > with all the problems those cause. In response to those side effects,
   > smaller mic stand monitors were developed. And those work a little. They
   > have their own problems.

The tiny mic stand monitors work very well when used properly.

   > The next step was in ears. ......

The IEMs work well too, at least until I can't stand them being in my ears
   anymore.

   > There must be a reason that old saying came to be so popular.

And I suspect that reason is nothing more than Terminal Laziness and
   subsequent Copping Out!

   > Well, yes. That ability for each of us to adjust the levels and mix of our
   > own monitors is the main reason I bought the XR18.

That's more than a good reason!

   > For our drummer, that worked. He uses a Samsung tablet running the X Air Q
   > app to control the mix in his in ears. He's happy now.

   COOL!!! Sure beats the alternative!

   > I sometimes wear foam ear plugs when I sleep. All night. Wake up, my
   > ears are still there.

Maybe you have very dry ears that have no moisture accumulation
   problems...but I'm not so fortunate.

   > I'll never be involved with transporting that sort of gear anymore. Or
   > being in a band that uses this stuff.

I don't even want to be hear it!

   > You should have put on a big ol' smile :-)

   Jim

I pretty much can't resist doing that when the Vibe is there ;)
