You can always listen to your conscience, particularly if your audience
really couldn't care less about Quality.
I do that all the time, because many times, I've heard how 'great' we
sounded, even for those times that I *know* that we really SUCKED!

   > Are you saying that the audience's opinion isn't worth anything ?

Depends on the audience, some are worth listening to their opinions while
   others are not.

It's like some of the lyrics in the Dire Straits tune, "Money For
Nothing":..."bangin' on the bongos like a chimpanzee...".
There are those who would consider that 'great' playing, but Serious
   musicians know better!

That's why it's important to play venues where the audiences actually Listen
   and Appreciate musicianship performed Well!!!

   > If I only care how I personally feel about a performance, then why bother
   > leaving my house. I can just stay here and play songs for myself all day
   > long.

Are you saying in so many words that your own conscience and personal
   Integrity are worthless?

   > I aspire to make them enjoy the show. Them. It's about " them ". It's
   > not about ME.

It Must be about you, because you're the "pilot", the audience are the
"passengers"! It's up to you to make it happen.
Does the pilot ask the passengers how they think the plane should be flown?

   > I'm perfectly happy is our shows make the audience happy. That, that
   > ...... THAT ... is the goal. To cause the audience to have a good
   > experience. So based on that stated goal, making the audience happy, if
   > we do that, the show was a success.

I wouldn't even consider playing a show where the audience wouldn't totally
   Love it!

Ha, this is too hard a concept aparently. I'm good with that. The more
of my " musician " friends who don't get this, the better for us that
   do.

   > If someone has personal standards, then by all means strive to live up to
   > them. The higher the better. If that keeps someone ( who would be
   > competing with us for gigs ) from being out there playing, great.I'

I'm not into competing in Music because Music is about Love, and being
oneself is a guarantee that we can all do our own thing without competing.

   > I wouldn't want to ever play for an audience with lower standards than I
   > have. What would be the point.

   That's precisely my point.

   > Let Perfect be the Enemy of Good. There's no other way to live ( and be
   > a failure ) :-)

With this being a Fallen world, perfect, like absolute zero, is out of
reach, but Better is moving in that direction all the time.

   > Nope. Can't have too many :-)

Talk about competing - sounds like you're planning on competition between
   lights and Music!

   > I specifically don't ( yet ) have any moving head leds. Or any lasers. Or
   > any dedicated " sound activated " lights. Or any with UV. Or a " derby
   > ".

All that's needed is enough light for the audience to see the performers and
   for the performers to see.

   > We'll add these things a little at a time. I had planned on adding four
   > more PARs to use as back wall uplighting before our last gig, but that
   > didn't happen. Too much going on, I just didn't get them bought in time.
   > Now, we don't have any band jobs for two weeks, so no big rush. I do plan
   > on using some ( 2 or 3 ) of our lights to do uplighting at this weekends
   > duo. Not a big stage, so just a few lights will be fine.

   > I saw some smaller, maybe 12 LED, DMX lights over the weekend. They
   > belonged to the club where we last played. Pretty compact.

I'd much rather put that expense into audio gear!!!

   > The thing is ..... and this is worth realizing .... when you change the
   > color of these LED pars, it isn't the total number of LEDs in the fixture,
   > it's how many will be on for a particular color wash.Yes, you can vary the
   > color of a single LED fixture, but realize the brighness goes up and down
   > depending on how many leds are active on any given color. For example,
   > our 56 led Chauvets .... if I go to full blue for example, only 1/3 of the
   > LEDs will be on. The individual leds in the fixture don't change color. A
   > par 56 the fixture has 18 reds, 18 blues and 18 green leds. They come on
   > in various combinations to get shades of color. So for a single primary
   > color wash you get 56 divided by 3, about 18 leds. Same for all red, 18,
   > or all green, 18. If you chose a primary color it's only 1/3 as bright as
   > having all the leds on . So having enough lights to totally wash the stage
   > in a single color takes more than just a few lights.

What ever happened to the good old days when controlling the mixer properly
was the objective? Now lights too?

   > In the old halogen with gels days, you had the entire brighness, less
   > whatever the gel did, as the fixtures brightness. Now, with LEDs the
   > brighness depends on how many leds of a specific color are actually ON at
   > any given time. A full blue color choice will only activate the blue leds
   > ( 18 ). A lavender / purple would activate the reds and the blues ( 18
   > reds and 18 blues ) .... and so on.

Sure sounds like overdoing it...too much!
