When I started wearing earplugs, the sizzler cymbals were about a foot
behind my head and the drummer was a cymbal freak.

I've never heard of such a thing unless there was hearing damage.

Everyone is different, and I should know particularly with my neurological
situation, so I guess it's possible. But I've never known of anyone with
   such a problem.

So far, everyone I've ever encountered who complained about excessive
   loudness had excellent hearing.
Also, there are those who have been fortunate enough to have made it through
life with very little excessive volume levels and so they're not used to
them and respond very negatively to them as a result.

Those appear to be the exceptions rather than anything near the rule.

   > Going deaf isn't a simple straightforward thing. Some think it is, sorry

Their hearing fades away and so they're not surprised because it's so
gradual - that's the Tragedy of it all.

   > In some cases. In others LDL.

As the level of hearing sensitivity fades away i.e. deafness increases, the
Loudness Discomfort Level also increases, until no level is too loud because
deafness has become total...and that's the direction Idiots are going over
   cranking their amps.

   > I'm resolved on this. Simply not playing loud on stage anymore. I'll wear
   > my IEM's, they can do whatever. And I'll pick up some regular ear plugs
   > for the off chance I get drug out to see a loud band.

I'd say get earplugs for musicians that let you hear the full range only
dramatically attenuated for SPL, but if you're not playing, who cares?
Protect your hearing. Then afterwards, tell the band they Sucked and let
them see your earplugs so they can tell you that the plugs you're using are
only for noise, not Music, to which a great response would be that when the
amps are cranked too high, what played through them IS noise, not Music ;)

Great idea for a bumper sticker: LOUD BANDS SUCK!

At very least they Suck the hearing right out of anyone within range not
   wearing earplugs.

   > People settle into beliefs, because they work in some situation or
   > another. That's ok.

It's okay if it's Truthful, Honest, and Accurate.

   > But things change. Being unwilling to change when you need to, that's a
   > flaw.

   Jim

Things change for various reasons, some valid, and some Invalid, and
Manipulators are always trying to Force *their* changes on others, and that
deserves all the Contempt and Resistance it, and they, are due!!!
