   A spiral combines a cyclical and a non-cyclical component, both of which can   
   be found in nature due to the constant play of separating and attracting   
   forces or tendencies which can also result in relatively or absolutely   
   irreversible processes.    
   Psychological emphasis on cyclicality as opposed to non-cyclicality seems to   
   reflect integrative tendencies (return to a previous state/reunion, emphasis   
   on similarity or symmetry). Cyclical view of time is characteristic of pagan   
   and Eastern religions    
   while Western culture emphasizes linear progression of time and the related   
   idea of progress.
