   The idea that the human soul originally lived in a spiritual world and at some   
   point descended to the material world in which it became lost (fallen) and   
   continues to reincarnate to the present day is explicitely expressed in all   
   the major sources of    
   Western esotericism that crystallized in the first centuries AD: Hermetism,   
   Neoplatonism and Gnosticism. Hermetism and Neoplatonism view all creation,   
   including the material world, as good and the soul's descent into the material   
   world as an important    
   part of its evolution and co-creation with God, even though they regret the   
   fall. Gnosticism on the other hand not only regrets the fall but also the   
   descent and views the material world as evil. All three seek to liberate the   
   human soul from the bondage    
   to the material world.
