XPost: alt.music.alternative.female, alt.music.independent, alt.music.canada       From: dalton@nfld.com              Tonight I caught a triple bill at The Ship Pub (still listed in the       new phone book as The Ship Inn) here in St. John's,       Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, of The Firewires,       Coast Guard and Trimmed Naval Beef.              First up were The Firewires, a young new trio without       a web page yet but they now have a demo. They have       great potential for major success. The lead singer/guitarist       (a young woman named Lindsay) has a powerful voice       reminiscent of Sarah Slean/Mae Moore with a touch of       John Belushi (Rawhide tinged) and belts out outlaw rock,       sort of funk/hillbilly/soul/alt rock with some grunge on some       songs. It was my first time hearing them and I was quite       impressed, and Wallace Hammond did a great job on sound.              Next up were The Coast Guard, and they were great as       usual with weaving rhythms and melodies, great       songwriting, and soaring wise-little-girl (though she       is a strong young woman and not a girl) vocals from       Rhiannon Thomas, a Sailor Moon lookalike. :-)       Their newish web page is       http://www.coastguardmusic.com/              Finally up were rap-and-rollers Trimmed       Naval Beef who I had not heard before and       they do rock and roll and at least two styles       of rap all interweaved with loads of humour.       They are a trip of drums/bass/guitar and       all three sing/rap. Great party band.       Patrick Boyle does the most humour and       is also probably the top electric guitar player in       town from my ears and also plays trumpet but       didn't bring it along tonight. Their web page is       http://www.trimmednavalbeef.com/              Give them a listen if you like high energy zany       hip-hop and some rock.              David              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
