I cannot offer an opinion on Brian's other solo albums, but I did
preview "Gettin' in over My Head" at the local Border's over the
weekend, and I have to agree. The more tuneful, pleasantly listenable
tracks are offset by the saccharine, at times sophomoric lyrics
("The Waltz," co-written with Van Dyke Parks, is the worst, perhaps
surprisingly). The guest appearances by Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton,
and Elton John don't add much value in my view. Of course, I am judging
this release through the filter of "Smile," which has set a standard
that Brian will likely not equal again, let alone surpass. (I suspect
this is one reason why I never particularly cared for Paul McCartney's
post-Beatle work, but that's another conversation).

   Just one person's opinion, FWIW.
