From: BOBHUGHES@TTLC.NET              OK, here's my "interpretation" of the third movement of SMiLE              We start out with the Prelude. The hero pledges to "get in shape"       because he wants to "be around" when his beloved is in danger. He       signifies this by showing off his power tools. The seeds of       foreboding have been planted. It's not "if" somebody breaks her       heart, it's "when". So we know that disaster is on the way.              The Elements- 1st Movement-Vegetables (Earth)       The hammering sounds turn into digging, gardening comences, the Earth       blooms with the hope of new Spring. The hero eats his vegetables-       he's in shape for whatever disaster lies ahead.              2nd Movement Part - 1 Holidays (Air)       BUT- our hero daydreams- not about his girl, but about being a pirate       in the Carribean, long, long ago. He is not faithful. He is       frivolous and frolicking. Holidays, is an Air song. The wind is in       the sails- and our hero is full of hot air himself.              2nd Movement Part 2 Wind Chimes (still Air) Not sure- either the hero       is in reality staring at his Wind Chimes, while he's daydreaming about       being a pirate, or his girl is alone staring at the windchimes,       because her hero has deserted her for his daydreams. Either way, the       two songs are inextricably linked by the "Long long ago/Whispering       wind"section.              3rd Movement -Mrs Olearys Cow (Fire) The long foretold disaster       comes. The hero's girl is in danger, but the daydreaming hero fails       to show up and everything burns to the ground. The relationship is       finished.              4th Movement Blue Hawaii (Water). Sitting in the ashes, our hero       dispairs. His soliloguy shows desperation and a need for rebirth. He       must break out of his misery. And the only way to do that is to do       something instead of just dreaming about it- so he goes to Hawaii for       real and begins to heal his soul.              Coda- Good Vibrations His soul finally healed, our hero is open to the       prospect of New Love. If he can find the girl with the right       vibration!              See, it all makes perfect sense.                                   Bob Hughes              Who's Whose at DC Comics?
