From: dowdlehm@idelete.allspam.unread.com              DEDICATION SET FOR MONUMENT TO HAWTHORNE'S BEACH BOYS       Site of the South Bay home of Brian, Carl and Dennis Wilson is to be a       designated California Historical Landmark on May 20, just in time for       summer.       By Ian Gregor       Daily Breeze              In December 1963, 19-year-old Fred Vail offered this simple introduction       in front of a few thousand people in a Sacramento arena: "And now, from       Hawthorne, California, to entertain you tonight with a gala Christmas       concert and recording session, the fabulous Beach Boys." A few months       from now, Vail once again will speak on behalf of the band he promoted       and later managed.              This time, the venue will not be a theater or stadium, but the spot       where 119th Street dead ends into a freeway sound wall in northeast       Hawthorne. That's the site where Brian, Carl and Dennis Wilson grew up       in a five-room house with their parents, Audree and Murry Wilson, and       rehearsed songs with band mates Al Jardine and Mike Love. On May 20, a       monument is scheduled to be dedicated there designating it as an       official California Historical Landmark, promoters of that cause said       Monday.              Vail, now 60, will be one of the featured speakers at the dedication       ceremony. "I think it's 20 years overdue, maybe more," said Vail, who       owns a recording studio in Nashville, Tenn. "Certainly to me it honors       not only the Beach Boys as a group and Hawthorne being the city       associated with them, but really honors the legacy of the entire Wilson       family."              The effort to get landmark status for the old Wilson family home site       was led by Harry Jarnagan, a construction engineer and Beach Boys fan       from Tracy, Calif. In August, the California Historical Landmark       Commission approved Jarnagan's application.              The Wilson home, however, no longer exists. It was demolished in the       1980s to make way for the Century (105) Freeway. "I'm just amazed that       the house got torn down to begin with," said Vail, who promoted the       Beach Boys from 1963 to 1966 and managed the group from 1969 to 1971.              The landmark status committee held a design competition for the monument       that will be built at the site, and received 16 entries from the United       States, United Kingdom and France, Jarnagan said. Most proposals, which       can be viewed at www.beachboyslandmark.org, feature images of       surfboards, waves or musical notes sculpted from brick, bronze and       granite.              The monument will incorporate a bronze plaque designating the place as       California Historical Landmark No. 1041, and donated bricks, which have       been inscribed with the names of people who have donated $100 or more to       the project, Jarnagan said. The winning entry will be chosen by a panel       of Hawthorne officials and Wilson family members, he said.              Jarnagan initially wanted to unveil the monument on March 7, 2005 -- the       60th anniversary of the day Murry and Audree bought their 119th Street       home. But he pushed it back, figuring the weather would be better in       late May.                     ---------------------------       You can still buy a brick for the monument at       http://www.beachboyslandmark.org              --       To reply, replace the text after the "at" symbol with charter dot net.              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
