From: dankaye@nowhere.info              This is an excellent documentary! Although I had of course read about       Brian's illness, I'd never quite seen it at work. Here, you see just       how out-of-it Brian can get, and it's so obvious that he is at times       stuck in a very dark place; you can just see it in his face and       demeanor.              It seemed to me that the one guy in the band really made it happen,       and basically did all the work, and Brian was just there in spirit and       in-and-out of the creative process at times. Mostly it was taken from       old Beach Boy tapes, it seems, and then just learned from that, except       for the new parts. Which is not to denigrate it in any way, it's still       a great work of art. But I was just surprised and disappointed to see       how tenuous Brian's "recovery" is, and how he really was still very       messed up and not always a part of the proceedings of the       reconstruction of "Smile" - or so it seemed in the documentary.              But it was certainly a triumph for Brian nonetheless, and it was great       to see him get through it and come out the other side with a "Smile".              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
