Well...that's part of it...but I think the MAIN reason is that many of the
Beatles' songs actually use different TAKES and OVERDUBS for mono and
stereo. I think those who care about getting the mono vinyls of the
mid-to-late period Beatles [and any other band, really] want it to hear
those variations that you can't legally get on CD.

And it's not just the Beatles, either...the Monkees have a lot of
stereo/mono differences, as do....[drumroll]...the Beach Boys.

   >But damnit, the stereo remixes sound SO much better to my ears.
   >Does anybody out there actually prefer the mono mix of Pet Sounds?

Sure, someone does. But I'm sure that most of those who prefer the mono
prefer it for one or both of two reasons:

   1) stubbornness ("Brian did it in mono and that's the way it SHOULD be!" or
"Stereo isn't real. Mono is the way!")

   or

   2) The mono version is what they grew up with and are used to.

   >Why is Capitol continuing to put out mono versions of Beach Boy songs
   >on their collections? Whenever I hear the stereo mixes, they are

   >on their transister radio back in the day.

Also consider that not everybody shares your feelings. While I'm generally a
stereo fan (I prefer the stereo Pet Sounds, too), I do find the mono
"Surfin' USA" to be much more energetic, lifelike, and "surfy" than the
stereo version of said song...and the funny thing -- Brian didn't even
   produce either version!
