   It's the old SISO principle. (Shit In, Shit Out).   
   If the source material (the record), plays at   
   -3db, then the resultant output will be half   
   as loud as at 0db. Thus, the stereo will have   
   to 'work' twice as hard to deliver the same   
   level of volume. The average home stereo   
   in the 60s probably had less than a 30 watt   
   output. That's not a whole lot, to begin with.
